Dangerous Dog Control: Renewal

The license for the possession and/or driving of potentially dangerous animals is valid for 5 years. After this time, renewal must be requested.

What is this procedure?

The license for the possession and/or driving of potentially dangerous animals is valid for 5 years. After this time, renewal must be requested.

Not having a license is considered by law to be a very serious offense.

Any variation in the data contained in this license must be communicated by its holder within fifteen days of the date on which it occurs.

The theft or loss of the animal must be reported by its owner to the municipal census within a maximum period of 48 hours from the time the facts are known.

You must provide the receipt as soon as the civil liability insurance has been renewed at the appropriate frequency (monthly, semi-annually, annually, etc.) in order to verify its validity.

Who can apply for it?

Owners and/or handlers of dogs considered dangerous.

The applicant must be of legal age, have no criminal record and not have been sanctioned for a serious or very serious offense related to the possession of dangerous dogs.

What documentation must be submitted?

From the dog:

  • Application for registration or supporting documentation for the municipal census of pets in El Prat de Llobregat
  • Vaccination card.
  • Document proving the dog's identification by microchip.

From the owner and/or driver:

  • ID card or passport
  • Certificate of physical capacity and psychological aptitude for the possession of potentially dangerous dogs in force, obtained at an authorized recognition center.
  • Sworn declaration of not having been punished for a serious or very serious infraction related to the possession of dangerous dogs.
  • Civil liability insurance policy (with coverage of no less than 150,253.03 euros and must include breed and microchip number) and proof of payment.
  • Proof of payment of the municipal tax

All documentation must be entered for each person requesting the license, whether they are the owner or driver of the animal.
Once the renewal has been processed, a card will be issued that must be carried whenever the animal is walked.

How much does it cost?

This procedure is not free.

This procedure is subject to Fiscal Ordinance No. 12 "Tax for the ownership and provision of services related to pets" 

The formalization of the procedure will be carried out after payment of the corresponding tax fee.

Once the application has been made, payment must be made and proof of payment of the municipal processing fee must be presented, linking this proof to the animal's file. 


Observations

In all public places and spaces, animals:

  • They must wear a muzzle at all times.
  • They must always be guided and controlled with a non-extendable chain or leash less than 2 meters long.
  • No more than one potentially dangerous dog may be brought in per person.


In private places and spaces:

  • If they are properties, land, rooftops, patios or any other delimited place, they must be tied up, unless the place where they are located has a surface area, height and adequate enclosure to protect people or animals who access or approach them.
  • They will need to be adequately signposted.
